Today, a day after the site’s May 1 fifth anniversary, it’s clear that Citizen Free Press (CFP) has quietly emerged as a growing force in conservative media. This mismanagement of visual weight is the main issue that makes reading Comic Sans an unpleasant experience. Meanwhile, the letterforms of Helvetica are rationalized from predecessors, without apparent influence of a drawing tool. The ironic thing about this distinction is that Comic Sans is actually influenced from a drawing tool: a round, felt-tipped pen or marker but, the stroke of this tool is unmodulated. If you squint your eyes, you’ll notice that there is a disproportionately heavy area where these strokes meet on Comic Sans, while Helvetica’s weight is more evenly distributed. This helps to give the letter a more even visual weight. For example, notice how the stroke on Helvetica gets thinner where the shoulder meets the stem on this letter n. Though the strokes of Helvetica’s letterforms are unmodulated, some adjustments are made to improve its legibility. The forms of most sans-serif fonts are not influenced by drawing tools. As printing was developed, the letters created mimicked scribed letters, and – while they eventually developed their own forms – printed letterforms almost exclusively had modulated strokes until sans-serif type was popularized in the early 1800’s. Before printing was available in the West, scribes lettered Bibles beautifully and patiently by hand, using a flat-tipped pen, held at a fixed angle, which influenced the form of those letters – resulting in a modulated stroke. This modulation is a result of Garamond’s form being derived from that of scribed letters. Comic Sans also has an unmodulated stroke. This sample shows how Helvetica’s form differs from that of Garamond, which has a modulated stroke. They both have a relatively unmodulated stroke, meaning that the thickness of the strokes on the fonts don’t change throughout the stroke. Both Have Unmodulated Strokesīut they have their similarities as well. To illustrate the poor fundamentals of Comic Sans, I will compare it to Helvetica, which is such a beloved font, that there’s a movie – about typography – named Helvetica.įirst of all, I should acknowledge that comparing these fonts is a bit apples to oranges (which are both fruits, mind you), in that they both convey completely different moods: Helvetica looks strong and serious, and Comic Sans is usually used in situations where one wants to look playful and casual. Some hackers have the goal of turning an e-reader into a more general purpose tablet. Each font weight must be specified separately, so if you want to use both the Regular and Italic weights of Linux Libertine, you would need the files LinLibertine_R.ttf and LinLibertine_RI.ttf. Whatever your choices, connect your Kobo to a computer, create a directory called fonts in the root directory, and copy the new fonts into it. At least one free font, Fanwood Text, was designed by a typographer specifically for e-ink interfaces, and you can find amateur modifications of fonts of varying quality as well. However, you may prefer another font or choose to replace the default fonts with free-licensed fonts. Kobo e-readers come with some dozen display fonts. For information about each firmware release and how to install older versions, see the Kobo Hacks and Utilities Index. You may want to replace buggy firmware or to change to a version that works better with your preferred hacker scripts. Kobo firmware apparently has a checkered history, full of changes - not all of them for the better. The battery can be similarly replaced, extending the e-reader’s life. The closest thing to a centralized site for information is the Kobo Hacks and Utilities Index, but do a web search for additional scattered information. To show what can be done with hacks, I’ll cover several of the most useful documented hacks. These experiments sometimes make Kobo a moving target for hackers, but its primary use of the open ePub format makes it popular among those who prefer not to use the proprietary formats like MOBI used by Kindle. For instance, Kobo’s first releases supported a Debian client, and several of its early devices used LCD displays rather than e-ink. Over the years, the company has shown a strong tendency to experiment with its hardware, no doubt in an attempt to increase its market share. The company also hosts its own site for ebooks and audio books. Rakuten Kobo is a Toronto-based company, whose products are a distant second to Kindle e-readers in market share. Still, the variety and ingenuity of known modifications is proof of how determined the free hardware and software communities are to bypass the arbitrary restrictions imposed by proprietary hardware. Moreover, as always when hacking, you may sometimes risk bricking your device. New Kobo models are released frequently, so all documented hacks do not work for every e-reader, especially hardware hacks. However, while I have used Kobo e-readers for a decade, I only recently started to explore Kobo’s hacker community. Any piece of proprietary hardware eventually spawns a community of hackers. Some people believe Tesla’s valuation makes no sense, but there is a leader and a vision and corporate culture there that make it possible to think they could become the biggest company in the world. “From a valuation standpoint, it makes no sense. “This cannot last forever,” says Chad Beynon, an analyst with Macquarie. Yet AMC is trading like a tech stock, not a business that makes its money by up-charging customers on popcorn. Many believe that the theatrical marketplace will recover from the pandemic-era shutdowns, particularly with Hollywood studios again releasing blockbusters like “A Quiet Place Part II” and “F9.” But they also argue that the exhibition industry is a mature business, whose revenues rise or fall by a percentage point or two annually. “There’s nothing rational with the way AMC’s stock is trading.”Īnalysts like Handler believe that AMC’s shares should be trading at $5 to $10 a share and note that the company’s previous high of $35 per share was achieved in 2018 during a record-breaking year for the box office. “I’ve been doing this for over 20 years, and I’ve never seen such a retail-fueled frenzy in the stock market before,” says Eric Handler, an analyst with MKM Partners. AMC also has $450 million in deferred leases, and most analysts believe it won’t be cash-flow positive for at least another year. Yet the company is still burning cash at a rate of more than $100 million a month and is heavily leveraged, with more than $5 billion in debt on its balance sheet. “I spend every waking moment trying to make AMC a stronger company, so the people who bet with us are the ones who succeed.” “It just really annoys me to no end that people bet against us,” he said. And without endorsing any particular stock price, he said it would be a mistake to root against the company. That did nothing to dampen the frenzy - indeed, the stock price more than doubled after the warning before dropping sharply and then shooting up again. But on June 1, the company issued an extraordinary warning to its investors, advising that AMC’s valuation had become detached from reality, and that retail investors risked incurring “substantial losses.” The best agile practitioners understand the principles behind each methodology so they can make informed decisions on which agile method to try first. Sidereal day: a unit of time used in astronomy, equal to the period of time in which the earth makes one rotation relative to the stars. To convert directly from minutes to hours you multiply by 0.01 6. Simplified, this is the same as multiplying by 60/3600 which is 0.016666667. To convert from minutes to hours multiply the number of minutes by 60 and then divide by 3600. Or you can find the simplified factor by dividing the conversion factor for A by the conversion factor for B. To convert among any units in the left column, say from A to B, you can multiply by the factor for A to convert A into seconds then divide by the factor for B to convert out of seconds. This is the same as dividing 28,800 seconds by 3600 seconds per hour.Multiply 28,800 seconds by 1/3600 hours per second.Multiply 120 minutes by 60 seconds per minuteĮxample: Convert 28,800 Seconds into Hours. The table below contains conversion factors to convert any time value into seconds using multiplication.Įxample: Convert 120 Minutes into Seconds Where S is the starting value, C is the conversion factor, andĮ is the converted result. By knowing the conversion factor, converting between units can become a simple math problem: You can use conversion factors to convert a unit of time into another using multiplication or division. This calculator does not consider the extra day in a leap year which has 366 days per year. Years in this time converter are calculated as 365 days per year. This is equal to 365 days per year divided by 12 months per year. Months in this time conversion calculator are calculated using the average of 30.41 6 days per month. You can convert between seconds, milliseconds, microseconds, nanoseconds, days, hours, weeks, months, and years. If you don't want to use a conversion calculator (like the one above), another basic tool is a decimal conversion chart. When you have to turn, say, 17 hours and 25 minutes in decimals, you can easily check the conversion table and see that this equals 17.42 hours.Enter the time value and units you want to convert from, then choose the time unit you want to convert to. Manually converting employee hours and minutes to decimal values (hundredths) is time-consuming and prone to errors. Minutes to Decimals Time Conversion Chart To get her net pay, you'll have to factor in deductions and taxes. Melanie’s weekly pay based on her total hours is then: 37.7 hours x $15 = $565.50 This means that 37 hours and 42 minutes convert to 37.7 hours in decimal time. Then you have to add the converted minutes to the hours: 37 + 0.7 = 37.7 The correct calculation is thus: 42 minutes/60 = 0.7 You have to convert minutes into decimals. This is wrong since, once again, an hour is made up of 60 minutes, and not 100. However, if you take 37 hours and 42 minutes as they are, you would get 37.42. Then you need to multiply the number of hours she worked by her hourly rate to determine her weekly total pay. The hourly rate that she receives is $15.įirst, you have to take the information from her weekly time card or timesheet that contains her clock-in and clock-out times (ee timecard templates here). This week she has worked 37 hours and 42 minutes (and no overtime hours). It is also essential for keeping track of lunch breaks, general break time, overtime pay, and holidays. This is crucial for hourly staff members, who are often non-exempt employees. You need to convert time into decimal numbers to figure out your employees' exact pay rate. Why? Because one hour contains 60 minutes, and not 100. But hours and minutes aren’t directly equal to money owed. Usually you get records of employees’ time worked in hours and minutes.
